    Default SA Zoo

Went to the zoo today, and saw some changes in the aquariums.

Have the cuttlefish always been there? I never noticed them before. (They appeared to be in a flirty mood today. )

When did they move the reef tank? The tangs didn't look real pleased with each other, but the corals look better and more varied than they used to. Last I saw, it was nothing but Xenia. I'm curious how long ago the change was made, to gauge the progress.

Saw the grizzly bear for the first time in seven years, too!

The changes were in the last 6-8 months. A friend went a while back and the aquarium was closed for re-build.

The cuttlefish are new. As are the bonnethead sharks. I really like the South American tank with the rays and arowanas, the shark tank, and the new moray digs but most of the other tanks just make me sad because of the poor lighting, water movement, decor, or condition of the fish. Plus they refuse to publish any kind of feeding schedule, so you never get to see anything eat. At least there are some better species identification labels now.

Make sure to visit the Tiny Tot area. There are some really big tanks there with all kinds of cool large FW fish-- along with some GIGANTIC tortoises (like 5' long). They're almost as big as galapagos tortoises-- I've never seen these in a zoo before.

Are you working in fish? If so, could you make a sign with your feeding schedules? That would be sooooo cool! Good luck! I'm so jealous!

By the way... if you like freshwater, you can get a permit to pick up some restricted species for yourself, like FW rays, Asian Arowanas, Channa (dwarf rainbow snakeheads ROCK!), and all kinds of cool things. My wife and I are really interested in applying for the permit, but she's a HS math teacher, and that doesn't really fit the state's criteria... maybe if she got certified in biology or something...
