It's been a long time since I used an HOB overflow. I think I remember using an elbow inside the box right before the water drains down.

I rolled up a nice section of that white/blue fliter media into a roll that fit into the box behind the tank before the water lets into the tubes to the sump below. This broke the water fall sound... Only problem that I faced was when I left the filter in there too long and it began to back up. I change it now about once to twice a month.

Okay so I fiddled with it again this morning and have the sump part perfect. So the only noise I have now is from the overflow box itself....more of a flushing/gurgling sound now. I'm going to try the stockman mod and see if that helps....off to Homedepot!!

Do you have a durso? Take a piece of tubing - semi rigid - like icemaker tubing, and put it down the hole so it runs past the part where the incoming water goes into that drain. That will allow the trapped air to escape.

I would think you have too much flow through the sump. It is suggested to have 3x or 5x. That would be only 270 to 450 gph. Less water flow would help the skimmer do a better job.

I think you were right....too much flow! I put in a ball valve and slowed the flow a little and it's 100% better. I still have to play with it a little in the morning because I'm getting a med sized air bubble in one of the U tubes in my overflow but I'm pretty happy with the noise level right now!
