would a 400w mh be too much for a 28g bowfront, if not what kind of bulb would i need?

Yes that would TOO much. I used to have a 250w over a 29g, it was little too much light, only the acros liked it. I'd probably go with a 250 or 175w. A 150 DE would also work well.

ok thanks i was thinking a 150 too. what kind of bulb would i need 10k, 14k, 20k?
Depends on what you like. I personally find the 20k to be too blue for my tastes. THe 14k are nice. What type of corals do you plan on keeping?

The color temp. of metal halides is really just preferential. If you like really blue coloring in everything then go with 20k but if you want more pure white then go with 10k and 14k is more in the middle of the two. Also color temp can very quite a bit between different brands so try to figure out which ones really produce the color your looking for.

I don't have one myself, but I drool over the one at Aquatek. Light is not any diffent from anything else you've seen, but the bell pendant looks really nice and sharp.
I got a 150w Coralife MH from Aquatek a year or so ago. It has served me well. I enjoy it very much. I highly recommend them.
