Soft corals and SPS corals DO NOT eat the same thing so providing food for them both is essential.
Soft corals eat PHYTOPLANKTON (plant like food) and SPS corals eat ZOOPLANKTON (meaty food).
It is not a good idea to keep both soft and SPS corals in the same tank. The reason behind this is the fact that soft corals can be more aggressive than SPS corals can. They tend to release pheromones in the water that is meant to kill off other corals that softs feel as a possible threat. Although certain SPS corals can be aggressive as well, many times they lose the battle when up against soft. A preventative measure is to:
1) Keep softs and hard far away from each other and be sure to consider the fact that depending on the species of soft, they can grow fast and lean over and touch a nearby coral.
2) Keep a carbon sock in your system in the event that your softies release the pheromones.
3) Keep softs above the SPS so that if the softs do grow, they will not directly harm whats below them.
Hope this helps.....

I may be ignorant but- I used to keep leather corals, soft corals, mushrooms and BTA in my tank with live rock and several fish. I never directly fed the corals but I did feed a lot of frozen meaty foods and plant foods to the fish. I did notice that these foods gave off some "milky" stuff in the water that I figured was small bits of the food as I fed and I always assumed that kept them fed. The anemone fish would bring brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or anything too big for them to swallow and spit it out in their anemonies. I had really good lighting and everything grew well and the BTA cloned two or thre times and grew like crazy. I have never kept stony corals or small polyps and have no experience with those.
