Thread: Corals without direct light

    Default Corals without direct light

Are there any types of corals that will survive without direct light? I have an overhang that shades a good area of open rock that I feel would look nice with something on it. Problem is, I have no idea what would work well here. My current system is 125 gallon tank with ~1000watts of light. 3 250w 10k metal halides and ~250w of actinic. There seems to be a modest amount of light in the shaded areas, so I was hoping that maybe some of the lower light corals would grow there. If corals are not an option, what else may I be able to place in the baren spots under the overhang?

blastos tend to be lower light, but they still need some. you could also look into gorgonians, chili coral, carnation, and sun corals - all of them would work, but will need target feeding since they are not photosynthetic. you may even try sponges or tunicates.

Ive had good luck with my brain coral in lower light. Its under an overhhang and 100 watts of t5 in my 29 barely hits it. Doing great for 6 months strong.

a chili coral or dendro/sun coral would look good in the space.

Awesome. Thanks for the suggestions. I may try a brain coral there. It should be able to get a small amount of direct light and if I need to I will move it out into more light if it does not look like it is doing well. I don't know if I am up to spot feeding a sun coral.

...especially a sun coral in a hard to reach place!
