Coral Beauty Angel diseased?

I have a coral beauty angel that had a small split in his dorsal fin when I purchased him a month or so ago. It has gradually increased to the point where it is a patch of white skin(open wound).

I went to Alamo Aquatics to discuss wehat could be done. Taking him out of the tank is not an option as he is fast as lightening. They recomended treating the tank with melfix or ethromicyn(I know I might have these names spelled wrong). Have any of you used these items, and would you dose the tank? I am worried about everything else in there.

I would read everything you could on the effects or affects of the meds on invertebrates and corals. I would be too scared of causing more damage to the other inhabitants or lasting problems on the tank itself. I live by the philosophy that the strong survive - it might just be part of the healing process that the CBA has to go through. I have had some fish live through bad stuff and find that a general rule is if they are eating well they can usually pull through. Check and double check before you add it to your tank

i heard that its an all natural chemical ( this is what i heard ) i have a full bottle of that stuff brand new if you want ill sell it for $10 it cost $15-20 i could then give you the light finally !!

Melafix is fine for a reef tank, just follow the dosing exactly. Make sure to turn off your skimmer or you may find foam outside of your sump/tank.

After I posted I did some more research on Melafix online. It appears fine as BigKGlen stated. Also agree with turning the skimmer off if you do decide to dose it- you don't want to figure that one out by accident. I would still look around on your own and research it before you make your final decision. Hope some of this helps you out.
