AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Salvation Army is pretty busy around this time of year serving the Central Texas community, with 580 people needing a bed. However, the Salvation Army is hurting for funding, with only 60 percent of its goal met so far. Raul Muñoz with the Salvation Army said 80 additional people even had to sleep on mats because the alternative was pretty cold, since Sunday night was bitterly cold with the front that passed through early on in the day.
"This year, we're down on our kettles," said Muñoz. "We have a couple of more days before Christmas that we'll be ringing the bell."
Muñoz said the most visible time for the Salvation Army is its Red Kettle Campaign , the time when those little bells are rung and the little red kettles come out to signify Christmas is right around the corner. Because the Salvation Army's goal is to raise $300,000 and it is only 60 percent of the way there, Muñoz said it looks like they will be ringing the bell on the day after Christmas and then on Saturday Dec. 27 to be able to possibly meet their goal.
Muñoz said the money collected from the Red Kettle Campaign is used year-round, whether it is hot or cold outside. It helps those that are poor, hungry or destitute. The money collected also goes toward those that may need a little conseling to reclaim their lives.
In addition to cash in the red kettle, the Red Kettle Campaign also accepts credit and debit card donations online from the comfort of your own home.
"As we say in the Salvation Army, 'Need knows no season,' and we hope that people will help us reach our goal this year," said Muñoz .

The Salvation Army does great work year round. They provide meals for those who are affected by storms (and they stay well after the Red Cross is gone), house and feed the homeless, etc. They depend on the kettle and gifts from folks Wills. They come to town every few years and provide for lawyers CLE and give us a huge book on planned giving. If anyone is interested in leaving a gift upon death, let me know and I will get you in touch with them.

Can't agree more on the Salvation Army. When my parents place was flooded out (total loss) at Medina lake several years ago we couldn't find the red cross in site. The Salvation Army was there to help out with cleaning supplies, give a helping hand, and even set up a place for people to come get a good meal while they were busy having to throw away years of memories.

I spent the whole summer working with hurricane ravaged areas in Texas and I must say I saw more of the Salvation Army than the Red Cross and FEMA. If anything I saw the Salvation Army doing more for the people in need. Heck they even fed me and my soldiers a couple of hot meals at a couple distribution sites. H.E.B was awsome in supporting the hurricane victims also. They offered the use of their warehouses and trucks. They provided water and food. I was impressed with that company and how much they gave to the community. I cant remember seeing Walmart helping any. Just my two cents to inform those who want to give their money to businesses that give back to the community in more ways than one.
