How long has your tank been running? I have a 12G nano that has been running for about 6 weeks and has been taken over by a "brown" algae. I have been hoping and praying that it is still the cycle taking it's course. Sand stars feed on the detritus in you sand so they are always good to have. also, they do a lot of moving so they stir up the top layer of sand pretty well
