    Default New GSP parent worried

    Hey folks ...
Saturday I purchased my second coral, a green star polyp. It was wide open until two days ago when I used a turkey baster to blow junk off my rock (I do this every week). It has been completely closed up ever since. My Frogspawn (first coral) is fat and happy.

    DKH 7, Cal 500, Am 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 5ppm, SG 1.024 PH 8.3
I currently dose with B-Ionic, Kent Marine Coral Vite: 10ml per week, and Kent Chromalex: 10 drops per day.

    any ideas?

I find it normal for them to stay closed for a while after being irritated. Sometimes I pull off a powerhead and just spray down everything and if I spray the GSP's quite a bit they stay closed for a few days. Of course they do end up opening up again all big and wide with no harm done. Sometimes they will open up in small individual clumps within the whole colony, then later all will be open. Its no big deal for me to seem them closed for a while, because I look at it as a way to slow down their crazy growth. Just watch them encrust everything they touch.

I had a GSP colony a while back that would close up if my alk dropped too low. If the alk got below about the 7dKH you listed, then it would stay closed until I brought the levels back up. I'm not sure if it was the alk level itself or the wider pH swings that the lower alk allowed that was really the culprit, but my GSP was like clockwork - if I missed a couple of doses and the alk fell below 7 or 7.5, it wouldn't come out. If yours is simply annoyed from the irritation, as alasg001 suggested, then give it another couple of days. However, if it's not coming out by Saturday or so, you might try bumping your alk up to 8-9 dKH and see if that helps.

Yea ... DKH was between 9 and 10 and then I added about 60 lbs of dry rock to my tanka few weeks ago. I've upped the B-Ionic since. I'll keep my eyes on it.

I had some gsp that was beautiful and only closed at night. one time I messed up and was only topping off and the gsp...as hardy as they may be..... disintegrated. This happened probably over a period of 3 months though.
