i'm certain this might cause some argument, but i was reading somewhere about how to clean the clear 5 gallon water jugs we all use.i think on melev's sight.he was using bleach.maybe mix a water and bleach solution and move the water with a powerhead for awhile.maybe overnight or something.then rinse several times and leave it out in the sun for awhile.the bleach i would think would kill any bacteria or anything.the main thing is to make sure its rinsed very well.cause we all know chlorine is very harmful to our systems.

if you use bleach when you do your final rinse use a double or triple dose of dechlor in the water.

sun is not an option, it is a 55 gallon water barrel with a cap. I am looking to clean it, it has syrup from soda in it. I can drop some bleach in it, and then i was thinking about declorinator, and then vinegar. let me know.

I think you're on the right track, just rinse it thoroughly several times and if you have to, leave it full with tap water over night and give a good final rinse. That's what we did when we purchased ours from Austin Homebrew. No ill effects happened once we put it to use.

Rinse thoroughly then fill with a bleach/water solution for a few hours. Then rinse thoroughly again and set the barrel in the sun for a day with the cap off.

Household bleach breaks down very fast in sunlight to salt and water. The solution you buy for laundry is already weak, and when you mix a quart with 55 gallons, there's not much left.

Since the barrel only had syrup in it, it's probably safe to use if you just rinsed it real well.

Whatever in the world could you have installed to this barrel that would have activated the filter?
