Thread: Different growth rates from same coral?

Default Different growth rates from same coral?

    Hey, there!

A couple of months ago, I bought a piece of Oregon blue tort from a guy who was tearing down his tank. I got the remaining base frag of a medium-sized colony that had a couple of frags broken off of it first. It's shown some pretty decent growth while I've had it, but the new stuff all seems to be where the frag breaks have healed over. The unbroken branches have hardly grown at all. Has anyone else seen this with their acros? Any ideas as to why part of the colony is growing, and part of it isn't (very much)?

    Thanks!

what may be happening is the base may be spreading, rather than the branches growing. It may be under a tad too much light. Try moving it down a few inches and see what it does.

No telling. Coral growth can sometimes be very confounding.

Erik, it's about a foot below the surface, and I'm running six T5s about 10" above the surface. Do the torts like it a little dimmer compared to other acros?

Have either of you tried clipping slow-growing branches in an attempt to encourage new growth? I've ready mixed reviews concerning that approach, but I'd love your opinion.
