Thread: RO/DI

    Default RO/DI

I couldn't find any links to the water quality of the austin/ williamson county area, and I was wondering about the silicates and phosphates levels here. I plan on getting an RO/DI, but I want to know about how often to change the DI. Also do you think that getting an RO/DI is economical if you only need about 5-8g a week? About how often do you change your DI? Thanks

Not sure on Austin's h2o quality. There's no real schedule to changing out DI cartridges. But you can get color changing DI resin or a TDS meter to take out the guess work on when to change out your resin. I only use my unit to produce 5-10gal per week. It's more of a convenience factor than anything.

I'd visit Buckeye Field Supply's website. They have an FAQ section that covers most of your questions. Also, Russ over there is great at helping out w/questions. Plus, they have the best prices I've seen for some top quality RO/DI units.

When to change your cartridges isnt the same for everyone even if your within the same city as pipes, water substations, and other variables play a huge role in when to do so. This is because when the city add extra things in the substations such as chloramines or ammonia in one area due to low levels of dissenfectant in the water, it doesnt effect all the others unless they shoot it through the entire system. Some people get higher concentrations of sediment in their water than others due to possible water pipe bust or simply bad piping within the area. Changing your cartridges with color changing resins and having an in-line TDS meter will help by letting you know when it is time. Always have spare cartridges in the event that one or all need to be replaced at any given moment. Ideally you should change it out once every 6 months regardless of where it stands. I have a 200 gpd unit and recently purchased an 800 gpd unit which I returned due to a defect. The 200 gpd I have to change out around 60 days. Thats of course I am also making up about 100 gallons of water every other day as well. Once I get the 800 gpd unit back, I am sure I wont have to change that one out as often....hopefully.
