Not sure on Austin's h2o quality. There's no real schedule to changing out DI cartridges. But you can get color changing DI resin or a TDS meter to take out the guess work on when to change out your resin. I only use my unit to produce 5-10gal per week. It's more of a convenience factor than anything.

I'd visit Buckeye Field Supply's website. They have an FAQ section that covers most of your questions. Also, Russ over there is great at helping out w/questions. Plus, they have the best prices I've seen for some top quality RO/DI units.
