Default The case of the missing gobies

I recently just had my yellow clown goby go MIA in my tank. This happened once before with a previous yc goby earlier this year.

I have a 30 gallon, with canister filter, couple powerheads, and a hang-on-tank fuge and h-o-t skimmer. Some live rock; only the base-lava-rock started 'live', the display rock has just become 'live' over time, so not much chance of a vicious hitch-hiker.

Critters include snails (narsis and turbo), skunk-cleaner shrimp, pair of o. clowns, bi-color blenny, neon goby, (and formerly the y.c. goby). Everyone gets along great; no agression and no timidity.

Both gobies have gone w/o a trace. healthy and happy one day, gone without a trace the next. My best guess is that they have found their way into my skimmer pump. I have a pre-filter box like this: http://www.proteinskimmer.com/Produc...Prefilters.htm and both gobies had found their way past the surface-skimming teeth into the pre-pump chamber.

Does that sound like the most likely cause? I can't think of anything else. And what steps could I take to make the pre-filter safe for those small fish?

Any ideas on goby-proofing the skimmer?
