I had the same problem. I finally caught him by not feeding my tank for a few days and using a piece of shrimp in the net. He couldn't resist diving into the net.
He normally would go into the sand when the net went into the tank but getting him hungry worked for me.

    Good luck.

How agressive a feeder is he? How bold is he? How big is your tank? How much access do you have to the open top of the tank?

I have a big clear acrylic fish trap I made that works great for my tank. Only it's kinda big and takes a little patience if the fish is timid or not an agressive feeder. It's basically an acrylic box with a side door that slides up and down. I lower the box into the tank part-way (it's big, like 16"x12"x4"), and put some food inside. Hungry fish figure out how to get in pretty quickly, then eat and swim in/out freely. The sliding door has a string tied to it. You can just hang out and wait for him to go in the box to eat, let the door fall, fish caught. If you think this would work for your situation, I can let you borrow it. It's not pretty but I've caught many fish with it, and usually within an hour. It's worked for verthing but that **** yellow damsel!!! I'm in south Austin..
