Thread: VERY ANGRY BANDED CORAL SHRIMP

Default VERY ANGRY BANDED CORAL SHRIMP

I have had him for a very long time, I feed him often with krill, and shrimp. There has been enough iodine in the water, and other elements as well. For some reason, in these last 2 weeks, he has gotten angry. It is the weirdest thing. He is going around eating the corals. His favorite is the frogspawn. He keeps on pulling off the frogspawn arms and eating them. I started to feed him every day because I thought that his appetite went up, but that hasn't helped. My nice large frogspawn is still there, but I have no hope for recovery. It has also eaten a couple of arms off the tree coral as well. I don't understand. He has never done this since I've had him, for about 1 year. Have yall had this kind of experience?? I DID add 7 hermit crabs to the tank. It is a 75 gallon. They aren't messing with the corals at all. I see the shrimp killing the coral all the time. Could that be what is upsetting him?

Coral banded shrimp are not reliably reef safe. I would say that you're lucky it hasent done any damage in the past. I doubt the addition of the crabs caused its change of attitude but, Id keep an eye on them, if they begin to disappear, I can almost bet that the shrimp will be the culpret. Best bet would be to remove the shrimp or all the coral.

OH really? Wow, I had no idea! I would have never bought him if it I knew he wasn't totally reef safe. Well, I guess that's that. I don't know what to decide now. Decisions decisions.

For the past 2 years I've been blaming my red spotted hawkfish for killing any and all small fish (gobies mainly), I've recently begun to wonder if it has been my Coral banded all along. I've never seen either actually commit the offense, but have seen both at times chase fish. So I really don't know who it is now. And I an't seem to trap or catch either so.....
