Thread: T-5? How many are how good?

Default T-5? How many are how good?

I have read around and all the places, people, and books say that clams and SPS are a metal halide only corals and inverts. Is it possible to keep clams and SPS under T-5s? If so how many? My tank would be 24".

I understand that the most common answer will be no, and that it would be hard and that its not reccomended, but asking these questions is the only way will learn and not make a deadly mistake.

    Thanks for reading everyone!

Yes you can keep sps and clams under T5's. The key is getting a fixture or retrofit with good individual reflectors such as Icecap and Tek.

Ditto that. ATI makes a quality fixture as well.

Don't forget Aquactinics! I have a TX5 fixture that will eventually illuminate clams, anemones, and a few select SPS.

I'd say it can be done.....

    http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/20...totm/index.php

I don't keep any sps, but I currently have a couple of anemones and had a clam for about six months. Both did fine. And, I only have 3 rows across the tank instead of the 8 rows in the link above. Of course, my tank is only 15" high.

Not to hi-jack or anything, but....anyone think I could keep any sps with my curren set up?

Mulitple T-5's should work on clams and some SPS. A good starter for each would be a deresa clam and a montipora digitata for SPS. They don't need as much light as their cousins.

At 24" deep, I'd pack as many lights into your canopy as possible so you don't have to keep everything at the top-half of your aquarium.

Could I find any T-5s retro kits for say under 200$ that would work? If not I would rather just buy one the the metal halide retro kits used on the fourms.

Anyone keep clams under any Nova Extremes? they seem affordable at the 4x24 T-5 fixture. Or could I just go with the 4x 24 T-5 fixture that comes with the Finnex models?

www.reefgeek.com should help give you some ideas as far as pricing and eye candy. www.hellolights.com is also another good source.
