dsl uses what is called PPoE (point-to-point protocol over ethernet) cable modems are just straight ethernet. this is why you need a login/password for most (if not all) dsl connections.

bridge mode basically just makes your modem a pass through device
a hub just creates a broadcast domain where all traffic is broadcast to all devices on the hub. not very efficient but very useful sometimes.
