6 fish for a 75 is not much at all and should be considered as a low bio-load which is a good idea for a new tank.

I really don't know the answer to this, but is it pointless to run a skimmer for more than 12 hours a day if your tank has lots of sand and rocks?
It's not that it is pointless, but with so much biological filtration in place, I am trying to keep my water a little dirty, and my skimmer is louder than I like. I am fortunate to be in that position, and most tanks aren't overloaded with rock and sand.

There is nothing wrong with keeping your skimmer on all the time and is not pointless. Skimmers are not meant to be turned on and off daily as they take time to re-adjust evertyime they turn on. Siimply keep the collection cup clean as well as the flow steady and your skimmer will work more efficiently.

While I can agree with your comment I've also seen Eriks skimmer and he pulls gunk daily so I don't think his has much problem dialing in daily.

I don't have to dial in at all. Not even when it's clean. 1/4" daily...
