Default What is this growing in a friends tank?

    cliffs on friends tank:

45 gallon salt water tank, fairly stable for ~12 years
a week ago all the anemones shriveled up for unknown reasons.
did a water change, now most things are growing back.
these white 'bubbles' are growing on a few of the stalks.

BTW, this isn't my tank. It's a co-worker's brothers tank and has been setup & running for about 12 years at his parents house. He moved out probably at least 5 years ago and as far as I know nothing has been done to it except for adding water & the occasional water change. Supposedly there are fish still alive in it though I've never seen it for myself.
