Running the drill in "Reverse" helps you not to prematurely penetrate the hole before it’s completely bored out to the bit's exact size. If you have ever drilled thin plastic then you'll know what happens... the bit will forcefully squeeze through and crack the plastic. It has happened to me on other plastic modding ventures. HTH.
