What they heck does RTN and STN mean? I gather that neither is good....maybe bleaching or something?

    Thanks, Jamie

Rapid Tissue Necrosis and Slow Tissue Necrosis - both refer to the living tissue of the coral pealing away. RTN happens very quickly (can take a whole colony in a matter of hours) and STN is much slower (can be weeks or months). bleaching is when the coral expells its symbiotic algae and turns completely white.

RTN = Rapid tissue necrosis, STN = Slow tissue necrosis... neither is good.. not the same as bleaching.. the coral actually looses tissue and dies,,, bleaching is the expelling of Zooxanthellae from the tissue which leaves the coral white
