Thread: Durso siphon keeps breaking

    Default Durso siphon keeps breaking

    Hey, there!

My overflow box uses a Durso pipe to siphon water down to the sump. It's gotten into the annoying habit of breaking the siphon at irregular intervals. Once the siphon is broken, the overflow fills back up, and the siphon restarts itself. However, it's quite noisy when this happens, and I'm concerned about long-term complications. The return pump is not yet a year old (sorry, not sure of the make/model). I removed the return pump and ran it in hot water with vinegar for a few minutes this evening. That seemed to improve the output from the pump a bit, but the siphon in the overflow is still breaking randomly.

    Any ideas?

Do you have any pictures I'm a bit confused because the way the Durso stand pipe is designed you shouldn't have a siphon because of the hole in the top.

I think you need to put a small hole at the top of the standpipe.. so it won't siphon

Ah, I think you've solved it for me. I mistakenly thought that the Durso actively siphoned the water down into the sump. I think what's happening is that the airhole in the end cap is getting partially plugged, resulting in a (very noisy) siphoning action that is slurping water out of the overflow chamber. I'll try cleaning out the vent hole, and we'll see if that takes care of it.

    Thanks so much!

Place a 1/4 air hose (rigid type)in the airhole will quite the noise down some.
Reefing is just like cooking, all the ingredients have to be just right , except you don't have to bring the water to a BOIL...

Definately want to put airline tubing, help quiet the gurgle. Basically it lets the durso burp in a weird way. You may also have to dial down your return if there is still a lot of noise once doing the airline application.
