Thanks everyone for your help. I still don't know what caused the problem but it seems to be better now. I adjusted the outlet of the skimmer to the lowest point and emptied the cup each time it filled. Eventually the skimmate started to decrease in volume and thicken and I adjusted the outlet higher.

Did you happen to put a new mechanical filter piece in place when this happened. I know when I'd start to use a brand new filter sock mine would go nuts for a while. It was something in the sock so I started really running them through the washing machine before using new ones now.

No, there was no new mechanical filtering nor any action on my part in the 24 hours or so before this happened, other than normal feeding...
