Thread: Gravity Question

    Default Gravity Question

So I was doing a water change today because my new Devils Hand Leather wasn't looking healthy, and I found my salinity at .0175. I am not sure why it was that low, and I had no other sign of problems in the tank. My huge finger leather is thrivinig., as well as all my other types of coral. I guess my questions is, in bringing my salinity back up, do I do it gradually, or do I just get it where I have kept it in the past? Currently I brought it right up to the bottom of acceptable .021, but previously I have kept it at .024-.026.

Oh, I haven't checked salinity in about 3 months. I usually only check it on the water going into the tank. Probably not a good idea.

Second question: I swallowed about half a shot of mixed saltwater. Am I going to die? j/k I have swallowed a ton of this stuff.

I think you'd only be in trouble if you smoked the stuff. Maybe someone should come up with flavored salt mixes so we don't have to worry about swallowing that nasty stuff. Not only would your 100 gallone reef tank suffice as a conversation piece at a party, but it could be a margarita machine! Personally, I'd slowly raise the salinity to .024 over the next week. No sense in stressing your softies too much.

Yup, it would be wise to raise it SLOWLY. I'd go from 1.0175 to 1.020 the first day, then 1.0225 the next day. I'd keep rising by .0025 until you get it where you want it. It should take a minimum of 3 days since who knows how long they have been acclimated to your current salinity level. -David

if you don't want to go out of your way when you top off your tank, top it off with salt water instead of regular fresh water, the salinity will climb at a good consistant rate over the next week or 2. your corals will be very happy at .025.

I like that idea Joel. Thanks!
