i would check out some photo forums/review sites and find out what everyone is using.

    couple of good ones:

    http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/

    http://www.dpreview.com

    http://www.canonlensreview.com/

i had the tamron 28-75 f2.8 and LOVED it, it rarely left my camera but the macro on it wasnt the greatest in the world

Here is a nice review I was going to go with the Canon Lens myself but per this review it and the Tamron are both great lens.

Personally I like the L glass from Canon it's noticable on the end result and seems to be of much better quality. Do you shoot raw or jpeg format most of the time?

Also, a nice forum for Canon owners:

    http://photography-on-the.net/forum

you'll find a macro section, and people will have pictures and tell you what lens was used.....really useful information even for someone who doesn't own a digital SLR (like me...LOL) or any other Canon product....

    Good links.
Would take months to get through all the posts on those sites regarding XTi, XSi, 30D, 40D, etc.
    Makes it more confusing.
Think I will still go with the XTi, as my first digital SLR and prices aer coming down.
Is the 100mm macro a good choice for macro coral photography.

I use that camera with a 100mm macro. I think it's great for coral photography.

I'm personally waiting on the XSi to come out, to purchase that, the technology involved is comparable to the 40D if not better. But if you want to get the XTi then you should wait till the XSi is actually out in april there will be another price drop after its officially been released to the public. The primary difference between the Rebel Series and the XXD series is the technology/user programability is a little better and camera body is sturdier versus being made of a composite. The XXD series is designed for the professional and the Rebel series is designed for the consumer/professional where as the point and shoots are designed for the consumers. Canon alternates series for example the 40D is out and the XSi is very comparable if not better than the 40D but the 50D should be coming in the following months in order to best the XSi.

I will continue to watch the prices, but dont want to wait to long (not very patient).
Think the XTi and the 100mm macro is what I will do.
i didnt realize the 100mm macro lens was $500.
Any opinions on whether the Tamron or other generic lenses should be avoided in favor of the canon macro lens.
    Thanks.
