Default OT: bit in a dilemma with pond

okay my parents are out of town until the end of Feb, so ive been in charge of the pond. yesterday i decided to add water to the pond, its usually no problem

well, being the stupid one, i ended up forgetting about it and taking off to do some things. still forgot about the water being on

later on i see outside and see the pond overflowing. i take a flashlight to see if any of the fish are out of the water, and sure enough, theres all the mollies swimming around out of the pond. i go ahead and put the fish in, shut the water off and start pumping out the water

i didnt think much of it until the next day, today. i notice all these koi fish at the top.. usually weird since they stay at the bottom, went out there and out of 8, about 6 died and some of them were ike 10" long. i go ahead and take off to petsmart to buy a couple of bottles to treat the water and begin taking out any dead fish. i take a different pump and set it so it breaks teh surface of the water.

i have a large koi fish trying to hang on and hes on his side breathing. i dont know if itll make it or not and dont know what kind of damage it might have sustained
    ----------

anything else i can do???? i havent told my mom since shell be devastated, but I plan on buying more koi fish when i get my paycheck in. right now im worried about the rest of the fish

It was the chlorine in the new water. Usually topping off a pond with tap water is o.k. because the chlorine is not high enough to bother the fish. I wonder if you might have killed the bacteria in the filters with the tap water. You should de-chlorinate the water and check the ammonia levels.

what must have happened is that the tap water displaced the original water in the pond.

i added a whole bottle that treated up to 1,900 gallons, ours is about that.

unfortunately my mom doesnt have any testing kits

i thought i heard that if chlorine comes into contact with air that itll break it down, really dont know if thats true though.

The chlorine will eventually work its way out of the water, but that takes time... more than what it gets from just running the hose.
You can take a water sample to the LFS and they'll test it for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, etc. but most don't have chlorine tests on hand. You can get those at a pool supply place
