    Default Mechanics?

Is anyone a mechanic or gear head on here? For the heck of it today I figured Id open the hood of my 2002 Chevy S-10 with the 4.3 V6 Vortec. I was just poking around to make sure everything is ok. I noticed that my coolant or Dex-cool resivoir is really low. Can I just by some new Dex-cool coolant and ad it in. Or do I need to take it to a mechanic to have this done? The truck hasnt been running hot but I honestly havnt really paid attention to it. I just took it into NTB for new tires and a oil change on Sunday but I guess they didnt look at all the fluids becuase the did not say anything. Any help is appreciated

    Thanks

You did get the orange Dexcool equivalent and not just the normal yellow/green junk right? Orange and Yellow don't mix or they begin to crystalize inside of your cooling system.

Yes I bought the Dexcool. Actually a orange red color. What I was actaully confused about originally when I posted is that in most cars/truck you pour it into the radiator itself. In my S-10 I poor it into a collant resivoir connected to the radiator.

In most vehicles, their is no longer a radiator cap.

Read the bottle of coolant. It IS important that you use a coolant that is approved by the manufacturer of your vehicle. Contrary to popular belief, coolant is NOT coolant.

Yep, I knew exactly what Coolant to buy just not the application. I found my Truck manual book after posting this earlier today which answered the question for me. Dexcool is specifically made for GM vehicles. Im all good now and the truck is happy. Just need to add my Fuel cleaner the next time I fill up and she will purr nicely. 2002 with 65k is not bad; I bought it with 11k so ive put approx 13500 miles on per year. Just keeping up with the maintance.

Just for info but I know that I had a 2002 Silverado and it had a message panel that would actually let you know if the coolant was low in the reservoir. It happened one time and I brought it back up the the line it was supposed to be at and all was happy again.
