Thread: Live Sand Question

    Default Live Sand Question

I am in the process of setting up a new tank and I need alot of live sand but I have done some research on here and found that regular playground sand works if you add a little live sand to it. My question is where is a good place to buy some fine, white sand? I have tried Home Depot and Lowes but no luck. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It may not be pure white but Pavestone Pulverized Limestone is working for me. HD has it, picked mine up at the Howard Ln/35 store.

Only problem I have is it created a nasty sandstorm. Even with rinsing.
I finally got it under control after 3-4 days in the tank, coupled with an AC110 stuffed
full of quilt batting. I still get puffs of smoke and my rock has a nice white dusting
but otherwise it looks good. Sort of a light gray with flecks of black.

Search on the Austin Reef Club for info and the DFW club(dfwmas.org) forum for pics.

Hey thanks for the reply, and will keep that in mind. I have had an off color sand and I have had the white sand and the white sand just makes all the colors stand out more. I hate to be picky but I would really like a white sand without spending a fortune. I searched the forum and it seems that a sand called Southdown and Old Castle was all the rage but it seems that it has been discontinued. Is there a knock off still around?

why dont you wait for somebody to sell used live sand . Its cheap and has micrograsm in it, which wiil speed up the cycle process.I usually seen people used HD sand in the sump/fuge not in the display..

Get with BigKGlen.....he mentioned he was switching around his system and is going to have about 100 - 150 lbs of his live sand up for sale. I think he said he wanted about $1 / lb....which is pretty reasonable...He told me it would be available after this weekend.
