Thread: Help with new algae

    Default Help with new algae

Ok so I am getting some green hair algae in my tank. I have replaced the bulbs and checked the parameters. pH 8.1, ammonia 0, nitrates 15 ppm, phosphates 0, Alk 3.5. I have started adding some snails but am thinking about adding some more. Any suggestions as to how I can wipe this stuff out? Thanks!!

Not sure what size tank you have, but this worked very well for me along with heavier water changes. After a few weeks the algae was gone.

How big is your CUC anyway? You could do the three day lights out method, it will make the algae alot easier to pull out, but manual removal will be needed. Have you cleaned your skimmer lately? It may need a good cleaning. Also, have you sprayed down your rocks lately? Next time you do a big WC, you might want to sray down your rocks with a powerhead and get as much garbage suspended in the water column as possible. Then do your change and try to suck as much of that water out as possible.

Ryan, with a tank that old, and nitrates at 15,, I would look for a place where Detritus is building up behind or under some rocks,, is 15 ppm holding steady or has that increased lately?.. I don't remember if you have a fuge or not. I have some macro for ya if you want to boost your nitrate uptake,, and this may sound silly, but when I was cycling and had a lot of hair algae and would help my snails out by placing them on the algae to get them started quicker,, it worked well for me
