Thread: clams on the half shell

Default clams on the half shell

Is it "normal" (ha!) to find tiny little empty clam shells strewn about on my sandbed? They are mostly about pea-sized, largest one might have been dime-size, all open and empty. I know they can be in your live rock undetected, but who is cracking them open and eating them?

    Tank inhabitants:
    purple tang
    yellow tang
    flame hawk
    long-nose hawk
    coral beauty angel
    lawnmower blenny
    pair of mandarins
    pair of maroon clowns
    pair of yellow tail damsels
    yellow watchman goby
    pistol shrimp
    sand sifting star
    basket star
    serpent star
    misc. snails and hermits

I only started noticing them in the past few weeks and I have been seeing them regularly.

Maybe they are dieing as part of a nitrate level or lack of food or something, I see nothing there that could "crack" em open. Hermits can eat them for sure, but to get them open is the problem...interesting.

Would be normal to find in different grades of substrate.

It's your equidistant rock work. No rocks should ever be placed in linear fashion spread apart at the exact same distance. Nature doesn't do it, neither should man...

That must be it! I'll try rearranging the rocks some...

Guess it's just a mystery of the universe. My husband says he thinks it's not a big deal, but I thought I'd ask the experts. All our levels have been consistent / stable, etc.
