    Default Refugium Question

I have been having problems getting chaeto to grow in my refugium. I have a 24watt pc light over it and all I really get is a thick slimy red algae on top which I think blocks the light to the rest of the algae. Can someone please tell me what im doing wrong.

sounds like you have a phosphate issue - can cause your problem in two ways.

    1. high phosphate can cause cyanobacteria (the red slime)
    2. high phosphate can inhibit the growth of macro algae (and corals)

if you are using an RODI, you may want to check your TDS, and if not, you may want to invest in one or use DI water from a store or dispenser. also check to see that your fish food isnt adding it to your tank and that you arent overfeeding.

Yeah, when I start to notice Cyano, I check the date I changed out my RO/DI units last. Just changed both of mine 2 weeks ago.
