"Splitting" is normally a good sign as long as coral seems to be in good health (i.e. it is full extending its polyps OK.) Splitting seems to occur more frequently after a big water change IMPE for a number of species. My NSWAG is that it's an evolutionary adaptation to a change in water conditions.

Copper, how big is your cleanup crew? How much do you feed and how often? You should definitely address the nitrate issue! Are you skimming?

maybe hold back on the phyto for a little while and see if that helps with your nitrates also.

My Kenya Tree corals split like crazy. It sheds branches and they attach to everything. It spreads around worse than Xenia. It is taking over my tank in a serious way.

yeah, they've probably also been actually enjoying the nitrate food supply. They do pretty good in not so great water.
