Easy BakPak Mod

Several people have been asking about this mod so I thought Id post it here so everyone can see..

First, you drill a 5/16" hole through the center of the collection cup lid like so..



Then, attach a limewood airstone to a 16" length of rigid airline ..



Next, install the assembly through the collection cup and place it in the skimmer.. The rubber grommet is to keep the airstone from floating.



Then attach some airline to a quality air pump, the results should look something like this when youre done... Thats about it. I dont recommend using a Maxi1200 on this skimmer, too much flow and not enough contact time, the stock Rio 800 works much better... If you have any questions, dont hesitate to ask. Enjoy your new skimmer!

Does this MOD help make the skimmer more efficient? Or is this so we dont have to have air hooked up to the powerhead pushing the water through the skimmer? Whats the main reason for this?

I'd imagine more air inserted into the mixture as the venturis tend to clog up quickly. Looks like it would be a good increase in the air to water ratio being more aggressive. Looks similar to a mod I did to a skilter skimmer about 20 years ago or so. Definately made better contact time and make the skimmer portion work mucj better.

Now if I remember right, you need to change the limewood monthly. The cost can add up. Is it true that using limewood diffusers, that the efficiency begins to wane from day one? As in the performance reduces daily until a new diffuser is added?

lol, The stone will eventualy disintegrate but it takes quite a while, my last one lasted about a year and at $3.00 for two, I dont think cost is an issue when you consider most other things in this hobby, and, the improvement in performance is well worth the investment.
