I think the confusion was in the question and how it was asked. This is coming from an ex mechanic also, so take it for what it's worth.

"I have been driving around with it on since then until it was noticed today."
I guess that this means that somebody found it "today" and removed it and decided finders keepers on it since they didn't return it to AAMCO either.

"Should I tell AAMCO about it?"
I guess you could, but since someone else now has it what's the point other than to let them know that it happened and have them ask for it back. But you no longer have it so why bother.

"What are the chances it could have got caught on a belt and broke off and something happening to my car?"
I guess as much as you backing out of your driveway and getting hit by another car, maybe slightly more. Now that it's been removed there is no chance though so I guess the car is still running fine.

I suppose what I'm getting at is that whether AAMCO was your first choice or not, they were there to do the job when you needed it done and in the time frame that you had to do it in. That unfortunately is the downside for you and the reason that larger places like this are in business. You can also look at your experience as if at least they were able to get you back on the road within your required timeframe. That's why Jiffy Lube stays in business, there are many cheaper places to get your oil changed, but they aren't always as convenient or fast and fit everyones timeframes as Jiffy Lube would.
Of course none of this was in your original question above, just brought up in your follow up posts. That's why I posted this part at the bottom. Good luck with the car and finding a good mechanic is like finding a doctor that you trust.
