Thread: Getting my tank drilled tomorrow

Default Getting my tank drilled tomorrow

I am getting my 40 gallon drilled tomorrow and wanted some input on my over flow. I was planning on doing a center overflow. I can't find the name of it but I would like an over flow that goes only about 6 inches deep in the tank instead of going all the way to the bottom of the tank.

Does anyone know any advantages/disadvantages of the style of overflow vs. a normal style overflow?

Like this but not the whole length of the tank.

    Thanks

the calfo style overflow is a way to save the floor space and still have an internal overflow. that is pretty much the advantage unless you make it span the entire back and it has no teeth - which makes the water drain in a thin sheet off of the top of the tank to pull out the maximum amount of waste because it tends to collect at the top.

What you have pictured is a modified 'Calfo' style overflow. A true Calfo goes all the way across. The advantage to the Calfo is that it continuously skims the surface.

jl1199 has a full back overflow design. i think the only thing he doesnt like about it is that right underneath it there is no light because of the shadow that it creates

Ace built mine and it goes all the way except the last 12" so I can run my returns from the sump and chiller. Works great. It's 5"x5"x6".
