I've heard that one cause for RTN is that the skeleton of the coral will absorb phosphates and sometimes bad algae spores will adhere under the flesh and start growing on the skeleton of the coral. At that point nothing can be done as it really is dying from the inside out. Perhaps you've seen dead SPS that were green, red or pink instead of bleach white? I was told that those are the signs of the above mentioned possibilities.
