    Default Sad Day..

Sad day in my house today... my "Lion" tank crashed... :cry

Those of you that were here at the last meeting may have seen my beautiful Lion fish... I lost my favorite one of all time My Radiata :cry the Volitan, and what appears to be now both my fuzzy Dwarfs all in a matter of 4 days... I don't know what could have happened...
nothing new in that tank..nothing different..same feeding pattern...

them first one to die was the Volitan... i did a Major water change after that and then 2 days later the Radiata died, then a mini water change and last nite the fuzzy dwarf and now i cannot find the 2nd fuzzy dwarf.. the ONLY survivor was Erik's Volitan thats been taken out of the tank already and my porc puffer, both tangs and my snowflake...

Im really puzzled as to what could have gone wrong so fast?
the last test was about 2 weeks ago and nothing was off the chart.. water parameters were ALL normal and i test everything...
Ive tested the water again today AFTER all the deaths and my nitrates are OFF THE CHART...

i have no place else to put the remaining fish...
Right now i cannot take care of this tank because my dad is sick and in the hospital, i dont have a quarentine tank and i dont want to get my clowns that are in the 58 sick... if anyone out there has a "hospital tank" that can hold my Porc puffer at least i will pay for room and board.. :( i'd hate to see him suffer.. I'll just pray that my snowflake makes it till i get a chance to do another Major water change first chance i get...

    let me know

    thanks
    Thelma

hey I'll hold your puffer, free of course ;)
The odd part is that you have a ton of live rock, two tangs, the puffer, and lions. All that died were lions, and few devils. Mine has a slight cloud to his eye, but when I came home I changed out my carbon, and will be turning my sterilizer back on. I hope my lion makes it, he looks well, except for the slight cloud. It has been a cool night though watching the spurs win by three as vegas odds stated, and seeing my lion back home. For those that don't know, I bought my lion, sold it, and re-acquired it. Thelma was babysitting it for me and she pm'ed me telling me about her crash. I picked him up today. It's so great seeing him back in my tank, especially since my tank crashed, again, recently and I lost my fave puffer. It was really nice to see a fish in my tank tonight, hopefully it's a good luck charm. Her skimmer wasn't as bright white as I have seen most skimmers, is it possible that something happened to her kneedlewheel???

I know that I usually take my pump off of my skimmer at least every two months just to clean out the impeller and make sure the venturi area the water/air comes in are clean of obstructions. Vinegar is your best friend for cleaning these. I just let them soak for about 30 minutes in a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar and they come out looking new.

all the same I think it's strange it was only the lions... I mean lions are incredibly tough animals.

I remember reading, I think it was in concientious marine aquarist, or maybe on wet web media, about a lion that had been left in a distribution tank and forgotten (I think it was in the phillipines or some place similar) and they basically had shut the tank down. no circulation, no filtration, and it had evaporated down about 5 or 6 FEET... and they found this Lionfish alive and well in it.

of course the distributor didnt take the time to re-acclimate it - he had it for dinner...

but the point is... they are TOUGH fish and to lose all of them, and nothing else...

makes me wonder if there was a pathogen, or perhaps one in particular thing that lions are more sensetive to than the other fish.

Are there any little ones in the house? god forbid you suffer a 'battery in the tank' incident similar to josh's.

Anyhow, I have a large tank you can use as a hospital tank if you want, but i have no place to put it up, it's in my garage right now. It used to be the huge live rock tank they had out at CB pets so its about 180 gallons.

ok what the heck is the "Hiatt Crash Cart" I must have missed that thread?? Im willing to try anything at this point.. i will call you this afternoon Thanks!

Erik - Hope your Lion is ok.. He looked good compared to the fuzzy. If you have room for the puffer that would be cool... just let me know...ohh and add some garlic to the food.. and feed more frequently..

Ram - i know its very weird... only the lions.. the weird part was when the Radiata was dead :cry it really looked alive... other than the fact it was on its side and not perched.. it didnt lose its color, its eyes were clear not cloudy... but it was stiff... not sure if thats any indication of anything but i did notice that..

Cliff im gonna clean the skimmer pump when i get home from work.. i did notice that yesterday there are very few microbubbles in the chamber and that isnt creating any foam at all......

One last thing that ive really been thinking about and i havent found any info on was what are the effects, if any, of a "venemous" fish dying in a tank? is that excreted somehow into the water? could that be the reason that only the lions have died? are some fish more resilient than others?

    any thoughts anyone?

ok.. some of what you said is really making me wonder what is going on in that tank...

Skimmer is not producing... why? even w/ a dirty pump it should still be producing something right? unless it's a needlewheel and something has hampered it from chopping up bubbles...

eels are scaleless and absorb o2 through their skin if i remember right... now, I used to have an african clawed frog that absorbed o2 through it's skin and it was sensetive to EVERYTHING.... i would have thought the eel would be the first to go, or if water conditions had gone that far south that the tangs would have come up w/ ich or something...

    it really is wierd.

Get Bstreeps HIATT on the tank as soon as you can, that thing is voracious when it comes to eating waste.

Yeah, my lion is a-ok. I watched him about as much as I watched the Spurs win last night. I even used the transfer water. I did clean out and repack my filstar with carbon. Ram, she did have a few damsels die, but there were some living. Thelma, give me a call, 710 4248 and you can bring your puffer over.
