    Default Lime/Kalk mix pickling question

While browsing in Walmart tonight somehow I looked up and saw "Ball pickling Lime" for $2 a lb. Remembering threads I bought it as a Kalk substitute.

So that's it right? Just dose like Kalk cause it is Kalk?

Its not a kalk 'substitute', it is kalk, use it the same way youd use regular calcium hydroxide.

Too bad I already bought a 4lb jar of ESV. Ball pickling lime is fine; I used it for years. I think it's a seasonal item (that's why I have the ESV) so I'd stock up. It must be canning season.

Which walmart was this, Mike? I've never seen the lime at walmart here. I've seen the ball pickling salt before.

I ran into a problem with Ball's pickling lime, i put a bunch in my reactor and after several days to a couple of weeks i noticed a horrible cyano outbreak,,,, in troubleshooting the problem i cam across the can i used,, it had be "expired" according to the date for several months, even though it was a brand new unopened can before i used it.. anyway, my Kalkreactor can go quite a while without maintenance so i hadn't noticed that the hydroxide had turned a dark brown sludge color.. i have never had any other hydroxide do this no matter how long i left it in reactor,(remember reactor is air tight). so moral to story is you can use it but watch the expriation date

You can get it at HEB as well. I've used it in the past with really good results
