Thread: Bristle worm question

    Default Bristle worm question

I have most of my rock and corals that I have left sitting in a 100 gallon tank and its full to the hilt. Because its so full, the stuff on the bottom gets very little light and the bristelworms seem to crawl around all the time. I am seeing what I know is two worms that are six to eight inches long. I have pulled a number of these out before and thought I had gotten them all but here they are again.

Any way to get rid of these big things? Anything that will eat them. Are these the same thing as the little ones, just one that got huge?

If I decide to break up and sell rock, I will have to tell anyone who buys rock from me that I have monster worms!

Is there a need to get rid of them? I have some also and some are getting quite large (6-8") but i have watched it eat plenty of large Tang turds WHOLE and it doesn't seem to bother anything.

    I dunno!

if you have numbers that concern you and you arent gonna do a DSB once you get up and running again i would throw a coral banded shrimp and a six line wrasse in there they will clean em right up the arrow crab works too, but i have had luck with the other two

I had a bristle worm that was almost 2 feet long, I borrowed a large "bad" crab from a friend and it ate it.

Bristle worms are among the most beneficial clean up crew available. Any you don't want I'll take.

Is that just a myth that I read that big ones will eat the anemone's foot?

JynxGirl, have you read ReefInvertebrates by Calfo? it goes into a lot of detail on both good and bad worms.

the uckiest worm I think would be the dream weavers... they slime your snails w/ narcotic gell then munchem, leaving you nothing but a shell and slime in the AM.

I think SamIAm had one at one point.

Anyhow, coralvores have distinctive mouth parts that can be identified if i remember correctly, and other than that, bearded fireworms are the only real concern, so I would just start comparing pictures on the internet, or with that book if you can get it, and be at peace.
