Indoor Reef Pool?

Hey, do you guys think it is possible to have a swimming pool built indoors (like glassed in porch or something) and make it into a reef? Wouldn't it be great to snorkel in your own home? :skeezy

I wonder what one would do for lighting...and how fast that electric meter would spin...and how about water changes...and paying for salt...and water...and filtration...and.......

Ok, it probably isn't feasible for ME, but I just wonder if it could be done.

Finally, something to do in Lubbock.

I honestly think it would be cheaper to just move to the caribbean or S.E. asia, then you can snorkle and dive all you want, plus you wouldn't have to worry so much about what happens when you spend an hour in a wetsuit... I'm sure all the divers know exactly what I'm talking about.

I've thought about doing the same thing using one of those 8 to 9 foot diameter plastic stock tanks they sell at Tractor Supply. I think they are about 18 to 24 inches tall and would make a cool saltwater pond. If you are talking about making it a reef tank, then yeah, it will be highly expensived due to the lighting, skimming, and pumps you would need. For a FOWLR or softie tank you could get away with cheaper lighting, possibly using a couple of those solar tubes. I've also thought of building a concrete slab off of the back porch. That way it would get natural sunlight and I could build a retractable awning of some sort to keep the tank covered when needed. Only issue then is the south Texas heat so I also thought about digging a pit for the tank to sit in the ground to help keep the temperature more stable. I think it would be neat, maybe have a deck around it with the equipment underneath out of sight.

On Reef Central, some did this. They are located up in Nebraska but I can't remember what the thread title was called. I do know it was in the Large Reef Forum.

It wasn't really swimming pool size, but in their basement, they made a very large sump. Cinder block construction with a sand bottom. Then they basically used a heavy mill pond liner to hold the water. After that the room was tiled. Looked very cool.

that is AWEsome! great idea. i've never seen a display worthy fishroom. most people take the aproach that the fish roo is for hiding all the unsightly stuff. this guy makes it the focal point of the system!
