Thread: Attaching/Mounting Macro Algae

    Default Attaching/Mounting Macro Algae

How do I go about mounting macro algae to rocks? Do I just superglue it, or tie it on, or what?? I've got some great pieces that need to be attached.

One is a rather stiff red (kind of like codium--but not fuzzy)

One is "string of pearls" --just the pearls

One is a bushy looking purple (not here yet)

At some point I will have kelp, etc.

Are there different techniques for the different types?

I like rubber banding them, the gluing doesn't seem to work to well most of the time.

I have some Dragon's Breath that has never attached to anything. Is it supposed to? Ive wedged it under, around, between and every which way on rocks and it has never attached itself

The Dragon's Breath doesn't attach to anything. Just loosely tie it to a rock with thread or tie wrap without pinching it.

Don't know about the other macros.

Sounds like you are dealing with diatoms. They are just part of the cycling process. No worries. If your tank parameters check out, I would add janitors (snails, crabs, etc)soon. What did you use to cycle your tank?

I guess I will just stuff them between rocks and see which ones attach. I may try glueing some of the "pearls". My larger frag of this is attached to a rock.

I had halimeda a long while back. I "trapped" it between rocks and it grew holdfasts onto the rock it touched. I'd read in a book to stick them into the sand. That never worked for me, whereas trapping between two rocks did. ..Karl
