:( Sorry to hear about your fish dieing.

If it has been a whole week since the rock went in, its pretty odd that the fish die now. When we moved my brothers tank and the rock was moved around quite a bit and there was die off, when we put the rock in the tank, we had an immediate ammonia spike within 12 hours.

Is there any way that something could have been dropped in the tank?

with sensitive fish like a clownfish and a goby are put into a tank that young, any little spike could kill them,, these guys are right if you had ANY detectable amonia, then your tank was probably cycling,, take their advice and wait several weeks before adding more fish... and i might suggest starting with a more hardy fish just to be sure you are on the right track

Tis true about the die off from the short ride home. In Nov of '05 I brought some beautiful and fully cured rock from Alamo Aquatic (on a super mega discount). Since I didn't have a tank yet, I threw it all in a 10 gallon tank, put a CPR bak-pak on it, a heater, and monitored all the levels. It was only a 15 minute drive home and I sure enough got a sizable but quick spike. I "cured" the rock myself for about a month before moving it to my main tank (a 12 gallon aquapod), and then just to make sure I waited almost another month before adding fish. I think this is why everything's done so well. At least that's my theory. Patience seems to be the key with this hobby.

Unless you know the rock is coming from an established tank and goes directly into your tank it's always a good idea to let it cure before putting it in your display.
