My Reef is Alive and well Despite My repeated Daily attemps to kill it!!
These work pretty well. They can easily be built with a trash can, rubbermaid tub, acrylic box or leftover tank.
You have to make sure that you can pump enough water into the surge box to start the surge. If your pump is not big enough the water will just run through the siphon tube without ever starting a siphon.

Where would this be place on a tank? And where would the reutrn pipe be placed to fill the bucket? Also Mike can you expalin what the black line is on the siphon tube?

The black line is a siphon break. When the water drops to the bottom the siphon breaks and the fill begins again.
This is a gravity surge device. It must be above the tanks water level. These are excellent for prop tanks and fish rooms.

when the siphon breaks it can be a bit noisy but if you put a lid on it that reduces the sound a great deal.. drawback here is i has to sit above tank and can be unsightly.. another good reason to have a fish room ;)

It's just like your toilet. So think of how that sounds. They do a great job of adding interesting flow.

I had a friend that built one of these and it was exactly like a toilet flushing every min or so. It was noisy but his corals looked amazing. I may build one when I get my own fish room.
