Interesting... But, how stagnant is that water in the upper sections? There can't be any REAL flow there.

Neat! I wonder if you could use guest fittings to pump small amounts of fresh water into different sections of the structure. I thought about trying that out with a hamster but if you have one you know they will poop in the tubes.

I looked into building one of these years back. Someone was marketing a how-to book and calling the tubes "fish highways". Used to be on www.fishhighway.com.
They work just like a siphon. If you remove water from one side and add it to the other the water will flow through the overhead tube. The trick is to maintain the siphon. As we all know if you get too much air in a siphon you loose the flow. In the fish highway design, if you loose siphon, you get all of the gallons in the highway on your floor.
I also never figured out a good way to clean the tube so I never built one. Sure looks cool in practice!
