    Default Mag 12 pump

I have a mag 12 pump that I was thinking of using as a return pump. I am running a mag 5 currently on my 70gal and I also have 2 seio 1100 1 850 and 1 tunze nanostream. Would this pump be overkill? I was going to add another return port so I'll have 2 returns, but with this much flow do I need it?

If you are thinking of a lesser gph pump, you might try contacting JimD.

Upgrading your return pump can turn into a headache. I went from a mag7 to a mag9. overflow box couldn't keep up. wound upi becoming a total rushed re-plumb job. Though it does move more water and the SPS appreciate it, wish I would have been ready for that much of an upgrade.

Not saying a bad idea just be ready.

i went from a rio+ 2100 to a mag 9.5 and had to buy another overflow box but i got that box from david which had 2 bulkheads and i could take the old one off which had a single bulkhead. It sounds like you got your tank drilled? If so i would do the 12 so you can make a spray bar of some sort and take the powerheads off

I second what Lonestar says about contacting JimD because he has an Eheim 1262 he'd like to trade for a Mag12. The eheim would be a better return pump. I doesn't have as much thrust as a Mag12 but still has around 900 gph flow that could be dialed down.

Also take into consideration that rather or not your overflows will handle it, do you want that much flow going through your sump? Sounds like you have a lot of flow in there already also, sounds like you have your corals etc. already in a whirlpool bath.
If you're point is to remove the powerheads you can put in a closed loop system and just use a J tube down into the tank about half way to use as the inlet if you can't drill it since it's already up.
