Check out his article on my web site about a commonly found hermit that you want to avoid.

Hermits that are good for your tank are blue-leg and red-legged hermits. The red-legs get much larger than the blues. They both grow pretty quickly so you will need old empty shells of various sizes for them as they get bigger. If they cannot find a suitable shell, they will take out your snails to make a home.
    135 gallon reef and 29 gallon mini-reef.

I hate to say it because they are gorgeous, but the halloween/electric orange hermits that are sold out of hawaii - not reef safe... well.. to an extent. I Have tried 4 and everyone of them is absolutely in love w/ every other crabs shell, regardless of size... they (all at different times in different tanks) executed every single crab and snail i had. maybe others have good experiences w/ them, but i will only put them in a species only tank if i ever did a nano i might use one... doubt it though...

electric blues seem far more passive.
