You can buy the TBPC and the right now bacteria from CB pets. That's the only place around here I've seen it. I set up a pvc setup in my aquapod (12 gal) last weekend. 2 tubes that hold a little over .5 lbs of the carbon in each, completely enclosed in the back chambers (i didn't want anything external on an all in one tank).

If you want more info, do a google search on 'hiatt tri base pelletized carbon'

    htltd is hiatt's website.

the carbon is roughly $10/lb, the bacteria is $12 for a bottle (enough for a 25 gal. tank)

It has not worked well just putting the carbon in filter bags in an HOB. You need the waterflow to flow through the carbon at a rate of 100 gph for a 10 gallon tank. If you want to do a Hiatt system then you would need to set it up correctly or it will not work. A carbon reactor or a phosreactor with the right size powerhead would work well as long as it is large enough to hold the 1.5 lbs of carbon you would need.

Regardless of the method you use it sounds like you don't want any problems but also are rushing to get the tank setup. Those two things are rarely compatable in this hobby.

Well thats true. Do stuff to fast it wont work out. I have every thing I need to set up the tank except for the carbon+bacteria. I was going to use a filter rated for a 40-55g tank which the flow rate is 200gph. So I would need the whisper20 rated @ 106gph? Or heres another Idea

The water would just over flow into the first chamber where the MJ would force water through a bag filled with carbon into section 2 ( there would be big holes in the baffel between sec 1 & 2) then the water would be pumped back into the tank by the MJ.

Would that work instead of using the HOB?
