Have you ever tried "Mudders"? Cabelas sells them, and yes, they are expensive. But MAN they work. You can walk across mud that would normally put you in up to your hip. You just walk normally - you just have to TRUST THEM to work:

You almost can't even tell you have them on until you get into the mud. The "flaps" just lay along your boot. The biggest problem with them is that you HAVE to trust them - they work best when you think you are walking on water! If you are hesitant, they don't work as well.
