When all the calcareous minerals are dissolved, you are left with the other insoluble "stuff" from the coral that originally composed the ARM. I believe that when it gets to this stage, the CO2 will also have a tendency to "channel" through the media and this greatly reduces the efficiency of dissolution of any remaining media. The CO2 is just coming into contact with the same spent media over and over.
